Cherki faces fight for Man City starting spot

Rayan Cherki has provided more assists from open play than any other Premier League player since the start of last season. Despite this impressive creativity, the 23-year-old playmaker is still fighting to become a regular starter for Manchester City.

Coming off the bench against Bournemouth on Sunday, Cherki helped inspire a dramatic comeback win. He swung in the corner for Marc Guehi's equalizer and brilliantly set up Josko Gvardiol's added-time winner, clearly showing his frustration at initially being left out.

Manager Enzo Maresca praised Cherki's quality and impact, noting that he brings a unique spark in the final third. However, the Italian manager emphasized that starting selections depend on the game plan and the opponent.

Signed from Lyon for £30m in June 2025, Cherki was recently named in the PFA Team of the Year. As City prepare to face Crystal Palace on Friday, the fiery Frenchman hopes his recent cameo has earned him a place in the starting lineup.
