Alvechurch and Stafford set up tasty FA Cup ties

Eighth-tier Stafford Rangers booked their place in the FA Cup first round for the first time in 20 years after thrashing National League strugglers Gateshead 5-0. Stafford will now host League Two side Grimsby Town in the next stage of the competition.

Caretaker Gateshead boss Ben Clark apologised to the club's supporters after the heavy defeat at Marston Road, admitting his side were far from their best. Stafford remain one of only two eighth-tier teams left in the tournament, alongside AFC Rushden & Diamonds.

In other matches, seventh-tier Alvechurch secured a trip to League One high-fliers Plymouth Argyle after a 4-0 victory over Spalding. Meanwhile, London-based Cray Wanderers advanced on penalties past Bedford Town to set up a home tie against League One leaders Stockport County.

This marked the final round of the competition where drawn matches go to replays, with all future ties decided on the day. The first-round matches are scheduled to take place between November 6 and 9.
