Manchester United and their calculated left-back gamble

As the September 1 transfer deadline passed, it became clear that Manchester United had failed to bring in a new orthodox left-back for Michael Carrick's squad.

Luke Shaw remains their only senior option in that position after starting all 38 Premier League games last season, but at 31 years old and with a history of injuries, a reinforcement was widely expected.

The club pursued several targets including Lewis Hall, Alejandro Balde, and Rayan Ait-Nouri, but high valuations and finite transfer funds meant United prioritized their midfield instead.

Consequently, United's decision leaves them facing a calculated gamble until January, relying on Shaw with support from Noussair Mazraoui, Diogo Dalot, and teenager Harry Amass.
