Champions League sets new goals record under new format

Since the introduction of the new format at the start of the 2024-25 season, Europe's elite club competition has seen a genuine goals boom. A total of 187 goals have been scored so far at an average of 4.16 per game, which marks the highest average in Champions League history.

Praising the clinical finishing of the attackers, former players like Ashley Young and Stephen Warnock described the sheer volume of goals as phenomenal and incredible. This scoring rate is the third highest in the broader history of the European Cup, trailing only the 1959-60 and 1955-56 campaigns.

Recent matchdays have delivered spectacular numbers, including 46 goals on a single Wednesday last week and a record-breaking 78 goals across two days on matchday two. Phil Foden also recently scored a hat-trick in Manchester City's victory over AEK Athens, contributing to the soaring tallies.

While the 36-team league phase provides immense entertainment and allows teams to play more expansively, some analysts point out a potential lack of early jeopardy. Critics suggest that having a safety margin reduces pressure, enabling clubs to loosen up while still delivering thrilling matches for fans worldwide.
