Manchester City have made formal contact with Liverpool regarding a move for forward Cody Gakpo. The 27-year-old Dutchman has also attracted interest from Tottenham Hotspur, but sources indicate City is his preferred destination if he leaves Anfield.
The potential exit follows Liverpool's agreement to sign Paris St-Germain winger Bradley Barcola in a deal worth up to £123m. However, Liverpool would ideally prefer to secure another forward, having targeted Yankuba Minteh and Ismaila Sarr, before sanctioning Gakpo's departure.
Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023, scoring 33 goals in 91 Premier League appearances. With increased competition in the squad, Gakpo is aware he may no longer be the undisputed first choice.
Financially, selling Gakpo for around £85m after buying him for £35m would represent great business for Liverpool. Yet, allowing him to leave while dealing with injuries and squad depth issues would carry a massive risk.
