Newcastle agree £52m deal for Man City's Gonzalez

Newcastle United have agreed a deal worth up to £52m for Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez. The 24-year-old Spaniard fits the exact age profile the club has been targeting as someone who can continue to develop under head coach Matthias Jaissle.

Gonzalez spent a season-and-a-half at Manchester City after joining from Porto. His departure comes as City reshuffle their squad following major summer arrivals, while Gonzalez becomes the fourth senior midfielder to leave City this window after Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders.

Newcastle have made six signings this summer, but head coach Jaissle noted that further adjustments were needed following the departures of key players such as Bruno Guimaraes, who joined Arsenal in recent months.

Statistically, Gonzalez excelled last season in Europe's top five leagues, leading the way for high turnovers per game and ranking in the Premier League's top five midfielders for line-breaking passes per match, making him an invaluable acquisition for St James' Park.
